Tower of London

The Tower of London is actually not one tower but a whole lot of buildings forming a complex and surrounded by a now dry moat. We had a humourous tour from a Yeoman of the Guard, littered with gory tales of who was murdered where and how. Execution is certainly a very effective way of getting rid of enemies but perhaps a bit harsh! The buildings were very old and impressive.

Naturally, we took in the display of the Crown Jewels. Sadly they do not allow photography! Stunningly beautiful, I think describes well the crowns, ring, etc. Did you know that there is also a special set of gold Communion hardware (chalices, patens, and other vessels), used only at Coronations? The first act of the new king or queen is to receive Holy Communion.

This year marks the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII becoming King of England. The White Tower held a display of arms and armour worn by Henry VIII, as well as other period pieces. It looked pretty heavy and unwieldy. The exhibition is titled "Dressed to Kill," which is very apt.

There was certainly lots of see and we spent a couple of hours there without seeing everything. It was a bit 'touristy' compared to some of the other sites we have visited.
